Hi, I’m Alex and I work for an internet media company in Frisco. I also keep the hyperlocal blog DENTONEER up and running. Right now I spend most of my time in WordPress and PHP. I’ve been creating things on the web for almost my entire life; in the second grade my dad helped me make my first web page — basically a bunch of random animated gifs. By fifth grade I was making fansites for my random hobbies, and by eighth I was running my own forum. In high school I began playing with content management systems — I began with the now defunct e107 and postNuke and later transitioned into Joomla and WordPress.
I have been doing web development professionally since 2008. I started out creating and managing a website for an armored vehicle company and was later hired by a web design firm. I still work with that firm to this day, but since then I began working from home and have taken to freelancing for other agencies and clients as well.
Everything I know about this field has been self taught. I don’t hesitate to hit Google or the books if I don’t know how to do something, and through this eagerness to learn I have gotten to the point where I am today. This attitude has been tremendously beneficial to myself in keeping up with the constantly emerging new technologies and standards, and to my partners in that there is never an obstacle that causes me to tell them I can’t do something or that it’s not in my job description.
I also like to think that I’m one of the few that can both design and develop well. This isn’t a dis on programmers, it’s just uncommon for hardcore programmers to also have a touch for aesthetics. See: the computer books section of your local bookstore. I spend a lot of time reading design blogs such as Smashing Magazine and studying well designed websites. I’m also a fan of typography and frequently visit Colour Lovers and Adobe Kuler.
My free time is spent watching art house movies, going to music festivals, playing video games, and looking at pictures of cats on the internet. Before they went off to film school, I made movies with my friends lending me experience with After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Premiere, and Vegas. This past summer I was an extra in a feature film they were working on, a zombie movie. The story was written by Joe Lansdale, a well known author and writer of Bubba Ho-Tep. The movie is expected to be on Netflix Instant next year.
